Yes, this is/was a photograph. I decided to experiment with some new post processing software, Topaz Glow. I am sure some of you have seen it advertised and maybe some of you have even used it and posted some images processed with it (I haven't been active in the daily community for a few months). This software can really change the original photography to the point that some may question why use it. I am one who loves all forms of art, so I would not be in that category. However, I can understand that point of view. So is this a photograph, or isn't it? I would call this an image created from a photograph. I personally like this image, but I don't think I can call it a photograph (my opinion, for what it's worth). There are some very cool effects that the software can produce and I may post more effects from this same photograph in the coming days. Other opinions are welcome in the comments.
Thanks for your comments yesterday!

on January 7, 2015I don't have any hang-ups about the blurring of the line between photography, when viewed as a mode of personal expression, and creative pixel-bending, also as a form of expression. As long as you're up front about what has been processed, modified, filtered, tweaked, etc., the only thing I care about is whether the result is pleasing, interesting, evocative, provocative, ... In the case of Topaz Glow, I confess I'm a bit ambivalent. I like some results more than others. I like the glowing edges it creates more that all the glowing streaks, filaments, etc. that get created out of thin air. So, for my own tastes, this image seems a little over the top.

on January 7, 2015The works well! I also tried out Topaz Glow, and actually liked the effects when I first saw them, but now that I am seeing them everywhere, its an effect that wears off and grows old pretty quickly, IMO.
